Mathilde Pinault is a typical It Girl. The French show jumper and model has Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault as a father and actor Salma Hayek as a stepmother. She has walked catwalks and starred in campaigns for top fashion houses, she studies at the prestigious Emlyon Business School in Lyon and is now an ambassador for Parisian equestrian clothing brand Dada Sport. But despite all this, Mathilde’s favorite place is nature, on her horse.

While the equestrian trend hit the high fashion world this year and will only grow this holiday season (hello leather boots and cozy blazers), the 23-year-old sat down with Harper’s Bazaar to talk about horses and style.

Now you might want to assume that Mathilde, born into a fashion empire, prefers maximalism and labels, but in reality – maybe because of her upbringing – she’s all about minimalism and comfort.

“Since I started competing when I was 12 or 13, I struggled with finding aesthetic riding clothes and pieces that were fashionable – in a simple way, because I’m quite simple with my style – but also technical and comfortable,” she says. say.

That’s why she was drawn to collaborate with the Parisian label Dada Sportswhich offers elevated, preppy designs made for the elegant yet down-to-earth horse girl, like Mathilde herself.

Equestrian sports have always been linked to fashion: there’s the regal elegance of show jumping and dressage uniforms, and the fun, shabby, Western attire of barrel racing and cutting. But Mathilde notes that when she started riding, few equestrian clothing embraced both style and functionality. With more attention being paid to women’s sports and their combination with style, she says, “We’re really at a point where you can coordinate fashion and sportswear at a very high level.”

Of course, the equestrian craze– rodeo wear, cowboy core, horse girl chic, or whatever you want to call it – has become so popular that fashion girls, musicians and non-riders alike are wearing it on the streets, on stages and on red carpets everywhere. Just look at Beyoncé’s Western theme Cowboy Carter album and next style stripeor Bella Hadid’s rodeo wardrobe (although she is actually an equestrian), or the comeback of the cowboy hat among celebrities.

At the same time, an infusion of sportiness has hit the fashion world, with sweaters and sneakers having their biggest moment yet, and athleisure basics making their way into the street style sphere.

“I like a long sweater, like this one Jiminy sweater that’s really comfortable and nice and warm. I like to wear one with, for example, wide jeans and a small pair of heels,” says Mathilde, as she walks me through her dada favorites. “It has something cozy and you can also wear it while driving.”

As for her everyday Parisian wardrobe? A long coat-like one the Delgado– she says: “For me it is very elegant, and also necessary because I am very tall, and it does not necessarily look like an equestrian piece.” Other recent obsessions include long skirts, backless dresses, pretty mini bags and cowboy hats.

A good mix between the masculine and feminine is also the key to good equestrian style. “Sometimes I’m moody and I want something quite dark, masculine and extra big,” says Mathilde. “Right now I feel feminine, so I wear a skirt with riding boots. I like to have fun, and I love that fashion now means I can wear men’s clothing or something really sexy without being seen as a weird person.”

Her ultimate style icon is Hailey Bieber: “I love that oversized blazer, vintage-cozy aesthetic.” Mathilde is also on board with Bieber’s natural, glowy beauty look. She says of her own routine: “I love makeup and I really like skin care (sunscreen and lots of moisturizers). I try to use natural products and always have some with me when I am in the stable with my horses.”

Mathilde explains that during her childhood she felt very insecure about her height, and that it was clothes and horses that increased her self-confidence.

“It’s one thing to feel confident on the street or when you’re out with your friends, but it’s really another thing to believe in yourself when you’re competing with your horses. There are so many people watching, and even if you don’t care how you look in the ring, it’s the best feeling if you already feel confident in your clothes, feel elegant, feel comfortable, and so all you have to do is concentrate on the horse, on your skills,” she says.

Another source of reassurance? Her family support system. When I ask Mathilde what the best advice stepmother Salma Hayek has ever given her, she says: “Like any parent, she always taught me to be comfortable and confident as a woman in whatever situation I find myself in or in what I wear. that I wear.” I carry. It is not a specific tip, but a feeling.”
